Smart pedestrian crosswalk systems in Saudi Arabia
A smart pedestrian crosswalk detects a person who is about to cross and warns approaching drivers with lights at the crossing itself. X Arena designs, supplies, installs and maintains smart crosswalk systems for streets, school zones, campuses and commercial areas across Saudi Arabia, from our office in Jubail in the Eastern Province.
A painted zebra crossing depends on the driver noticing the pedestrian in time. At night, on wide roads and where drivers are distracted, that is not always the case. An active crossing adds a clear signal at the moment it is needed, and stays quiet the rest of the time.
Components of a smart crosswalk
Pedestrian detection
Push buttons, thermal or video sensors and bollard sensors recognise a pedestrian who is waiting or crossing.
In-road LED markers
LED studs set flush in the pavement along the crossing light up or flash towards the approaching traffic.
Flashing signs and beacons
LED-enhanced crossing signs and flashing beacons on poles or overhead repeat the warning at driver eye level.
Crossing lighting
Dedicated lighting makes the person on the crossing visible to drivers at night.
Where smart crosswalks help most
School zones
Crossings used by children at fixed times of the day.
Mid-block crossings on wide roads
Crossings between junctions, where drivers do not expect to stop.
Commercial streets and mosques
Places with many pedestrians in the evening and at night.
Campuses, hospitals and compounds
Internal roads where pedestrians and vehicles share limited space.
Our scope of work
Site review and design
We look at the road width, speed, lighting and pedestrian flows, and select the suitable combination of detection and warning.
Supply and installation
Sensors, LED markers, signs, the controller and power, including solar power where no grid connection is available.
Integration with traffic signals
Where the crossing is signalised, the system is connected to the signal controller.
Maintenance
Cleaning and checking of the markers and sensors, and replacement of damaged units.
Frequently asked questions about smart pedestrian crosswalks
What is a smart pedestrian crosswalk?
It is a pedestrian crossing fitted with detection and active warning devices, such as in-road LED markers and flashing signs, that switch on when a pedestrian is present.
How is it different from a signalised pedestrian crossing?
A signalised crossing stops vehicles with a red signal. A smart crosswalk warns drivers and makes the pedestrian more visible, without a full set of traffic signals. The choice depends on speed, traffic volume and pedestrian demand.
Can a smart crosswalk run on solar power?
Yes. The LED devices use little power, so many installations are solar powered and need no grid connection.
Are in-road LED markers suitable for heavy traffic?
They are made to be driven over, but like any equipment in the road surface they need inspection. We select markers rated for the traffic on the road and include them in the maintenance plan.
Does X Arena install smart crosswalks across Saudi Arabia?
Yes. X Arena designs, supplies, installs and maintains smart pedestrian crosswalk systems throughout Saudi Arabia. Our office is in Jubail, Eastern Province.
