Video detection systems for traffic signals and monitoring in Saudi Arabia
Video detection uses cameras and image processing to tell a traffic signal controller, or a control centre, what is happening on the road. X Arena supplies, installs, configures and maintains video detection systems for intersections and highways across Saudi Arabia, from our office in Jubail in the Eastern Province.
Compared with inductive loops cut into the pavement, a video detector is mounted on a pole or mast arm, covers several lanes from one position and can be re-configured in software when the road layout changes. This makes it a practical choice for new junctions, for upgrades and for roads where cutting the surface is not wanted.
What video detection can do
Stop-line and advance detection
Virtual detection zones replace loops at the stop line and upstream, and give the controller the calls it needs for actuated or adaptive operation.
Queue and occupancy measurement
The system measures queue length and occupancy per approach, which helps to balance green time between competing movements.
Counting and classification
The same cameras can count vehicles, classify them and record turning movements for traffic studies.
Automatic incident detection
On highways and in tunnels the system raises an alarm for stopped vehicles, wrong-way driving, slow traffic or debris.
Designing a detection site
Camera position and height
Coverage and accuracy depend on where the camera is mounted. We select the position, height and lens for each approach.
Lighting, sun and weather
Glare at sunrise and sunset, night conditions, dust and rain are considered when choosing the sensor, including thermal cameras where they are justified.
Integration with the controller
Detector outputs are connected to the signal controller through the cabinet interface that the controller family uses.
Communication and monitoring
Video and detector status can be sent to the control centre so that operators can verify what the detector sees.
Our scope of work
Supply and installation
Cameras, processors, brackets, cabling and cabinet equipment installed on new or existing poles.
Configuration
Drawing of detection zones, setting of parameters and mapping of outputs to controller phases.
Testing and tuning
Checking of detection against real traffic by day and by night, and adjustment until it is stable.
Maintenance
Lens cleaning, alignment checks, software updates and replacement of faulty units.
Frequently asked questions about video detection
What is a video detection system?
It is a camera with image processing that detects vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians in defined zones of the image and passes this information to a traffic signal controller or a traffic management system.
Is video detection better than inductive loops?
Each has a place. Loops are simple and proven but need cutting of the pavement and are damaged by road works. Video is installed above the road, covers several lanes and is changed in software, but it needs a good camera position and regular cleaning.
Does video detection work at night and in dust?
Modern detectors work at night using vehicle lights and street lighting. In difficult conditions such as heavy dust or fog, thermal cameras or radar can be used alone or together with video.
Can video detection be added to an existing junction?
Yes. Cameras can usually be mounted on the existing poles or mast arms and connected to the existing controller, which makes this a common upgrade.
Does X Arena install video detection across Saudi Arabia?
Yes. X Arena supplies, installs and maintains video detection systems throughout Saudi Arabia. Our office is in Jubail, Eastern Province.
